Wesley College Music Program Offers New Concentration

Wesley College will be offering a new concentration in music education starting in the fall 2018 semester. The program is designed for students to go directly into Wesley’s master of art in teaching program, where they would complete their student teaching and certification as quickly as five years from start to finish.

The new curriculum was designed by Wesley’s new Director of Bands, Dr. Jordan Kinsey, working in collaboration with Wesley’s Education Department. Dr. Kinsey has taught instrumental and vocal music in the public schools of Kentucky, Kansas, Missouri, and Pennsylvania in a variety of rural and suburban school environments. “We designed this program to be rigorous, practical, and forward-thinking,” said Dr. Kinsey.

“Our program is structured to prepare students to enter today’s work environment in K-12 education,” said Wesley College Associate Professor of Music, Chair of Music and the Arts, Dr. James Wilson. “Our students are required to take a mixture of courses that will prepare them for band, choir, and general music. Delaware principals are looking for music instructors who are well-rounded musicians and educators to fill a variety of positions in music, some of which combine different types of classes and ensembles.”

Dr. Kinsey explains the reason for the program is that “for years, many high school students in Delaware who wanted to pursue a career in music education would leave the state to do so, and many of them didn’t come back to teach here after finishing their degree.” One of this program’s primary objectives is to keep Delaware students in Delaware, where they can contribute to the musical education in their own communities.

With this new program, it will be possible to complete a combined undergraduate and master’s program within five years. “Students that can maintain a full course load each semester and plan accordingly could earn both degrees in a very quick timeframe,” said Dr. Wilson.
