Wesley College Cannon Scholar S-STEM Team Consult with John Carroll University

Wesley faculty and staff were invited to consult with John Carroll University (JCU) regarding helping diverse student populations thrive in the higher education environment from September 11-13, 2018 as part of JCU’s First in the World, Improvement of Post secondary Education, grant.

JCU Associate Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Chrystal Bruce, was instrumental in bringing the Wesley group to campus to talk about the importance of the alignment of strategies to specifically cultivate a College environment that promotes learning with associated student persistence and success.

Faculty and staff offered several power point presentations to JCU including, Quantitative Analysis and Data Analytics in the New Core Curriculum, Improving Retention with a Comprehensive Early Alert System: Wesley College’s Story, High-Impact Practices That Increase Wesley College STEM-Completion Rates and Achieving Higher Skill Levels in STEM Education.

The Wesley team included Professor of Chemistry and Dean of Interdisciplinary/Collaborative Sponsored Research Malcolm J. D’Souza, Professor of Mathematics Derald E. Wentzien, Associate Professor and Program Director of Environmental Studies Stephanie Stotts, Associate Professor of Mathematics Paul E. Olsen, Director of Student Success & Retention Christine M. McDermott, and Coordinator of Tutoring Programs Danielle L. Archambault.

During the many interactions, the Wesley College team explained, in detail, the many programs and initiatives that assist students in their academic development. Many of Wesley’s proactive and reactive intervention techniques, namely; living-learning communities, mentored research program, core-curriculum revision, student success and retention services, and data analytics (informatics), were sponsored in part through the Colleges NSF EPSCoR (DE-EPSCoR), NSF S-STEM (Cannon Scholar), and NIH-NIGMS INBRE (DE-INBRE) programs.
