Dr. Albee Mendoza’s MATOP Outcomes 2019 Report

Associate Professor of Psychology, Dr. Albee Mendoza, represented Wesley College at the Mid-Atlantic Teachers of Psychology Conference (MATOP) on October 4, 2019. MATOP brings together teachers of psychology from universities, four-year colleges, two-year colleges, and high schools to discuss practices inside and outside of the classroom in order to better serve their students.

Dr. Mendoza attended four sessions and a keynote address by Dr. Bernard Beins. His talk reflected on the history of the teaching of psychology and how it informs current pedagogical and administrative practices. Other sessions centered on utilizing behavior modification principles to reduce phone use in the classroom, reflecting on how to best talk to students about uncomfortable topics, understanding the new features of the most current edition of the APA Style Manual, and enhancing teaching practices to incorporate culturally relevant pedagogy.

Dr. Mendoza’s talk, Supporting First-Generation College Students: Changing History to Inform Their Future, was attended by 6 teachers of psychology. Attendees discussed how to balance standards and support, how to equalize skill-building and content, how to deal with challenges in motivation, how to engage in culturally relevant teaching, how to manage classroom behaviors, and how to model and demonstrate cultural competency.

Application Statement

In addition to incorporating strategies learned to improve her student interactions, Dr. Mendoza will network with colleagues met at the conference to pursue research projects (e.g., partnering with Prince Georges Community College to add participants to an existing dataset) and leadership positions at national organizations (e.g., discussing opportunity to be a member of the Committee on Associate and Baccalaureate Education). Dr. Mendoza will also work on a proposal to present at next year’s MATOP conference.
