Wesley College celebrated Founders Day on March 20, 2019 at the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, DE. The event is an annual tradition that celebrates the beginnings of Wesley College (founded in 1873) and recognizes donors’ contributions and students’ accomplishments with scholarships and awards.
Wesley College Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Laura Bigham Mayse ’92 was a featured speaker, providing the welcoming statements. President Robert E. Clark II offered the opening greetings and held a moment of silence to remember the life of Wesley College student, Erick Acevedo-Palencia.
More than $103,000 in scholarship money was awarded to 84 students. Many of the scholarships were merit based and specific to areas of study. In addition, 27 students received academic departmental awards, which recognize applicants that are the top students in each department based on grade point average and other factors.
“Founders Day is a wonderful celebration of our history, from our generous donors to the outstanding achievements of our students,” said Wesley College Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Laura Bigham Mayse.
During the event faculty promotions were recognized as well. Mary Jenson, Ph.D., Albee Mendoza, Ph.D., Tamala Paxton, D.N.P. and Soeun You, Ph.D. were promoted to Associate Professor. In addition, Cynthia Newton, Ph.D. was promoted to full professor. Lastly, Darla Davidson, M.S.N., Varleisha Gibbs, Ph.D., Stephanie Holyfield, Ph.D., Denise Morris, Ed.D. and Stephanie Stotts, Ph.D. were approved for tenure.
