Dr. Mika Shipley

Professor and Department Chair of Literature and Languages

Why I Teach

I am fulfilled by supporting and witnessing the development students demonstrate through college, from scared, timid freshmen to confident, engaged seniors.

Professional Activities

My research interests include summarizing, the transitions students make between high school and college, and basic writing. I have presented at national conferences covering subjects from writing and technology to plagiarism. In 2014, I wrote and had published a textbook, An Elephant’s Idea: A Basic Companion for Writers. This is the text currently used at Wesley in all Basic Writing courses. In 2019, I revised An Elephant’s Idea for its second edition. I am currently working on an online supplement for this text. In addition to my writing activities, I have supervised many internships and have helped my students get published in various forums. In 2019, I also led a collaboration of Wesley students with the Downtown Dover Partnership.
