Why I Teach

For me, the joy of teaching is in learning, whether I observe students as they learn or I learn with my students. The profession is especially rewarding and interesting when graduates tell me of their success and thank me for my help along the way. Recently, off-campus, a young man stopped me and declared, 'Uncle Max always says he never would have become a CPA if it hadn’t been for you.

Professional Activities

In an early career as a flautist, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and then taught while traveling for five years around the world, an education and experience that afforded me a base for building a change of direction in business. The combination of liberal arts and the professional areas of business, serves me well at Wesley College since the functional areas of business are grounded in the liberal arts and sciences. A liberal arts based education also provides the environment for stimulating a desire for life-long learning.

Just as Wesley College offers many opportunities for student learning and development, it does for faculty as well. I operated a CPA review course ten years for our students and others in nearby communities. Through three funded grant proposals I obtained the first computers on campus for student use. I established a student chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) at Wesley and later served on the State Board of Directors of the IMA. Writing and developing numerous academic programs in the business and accounting departments is also a satisfying experience.

Currently, my research interest emanates from my dissertation: the expectation gap, a gap in understanding the role of the auditor between what is stated by the profession and what the public understands the role to be. I am a member of the American Accounting Association.
