Former Wesley College quarterback Joe Callahan ’16 recently signed a reserve/futures contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Callahan has spent time with the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns and most recently with the Philadelphia Eagles. During the 2018 preseason with the Eagles, he appeared in three games and started the Eagles’ final preseason game. He completed 59.6 percent of his passes for 262 yards and led the Eagles to a comeback victory over the New York Jets with a last-second touchdown pass on Aug. 30.
During his two seasons with the Green Bay Packers as a backup quarterback to Aaron Rodgers and Brett Hundley, Callahan became the first Wesley football player to see time in a regular season NFL game when he entered in the Week 17 game in 2017 against the Detroit Lions. He completed 5-of-7 passes for 11 yards in the Packers’ season finale.
The 2015 Gagliardi Trophy winner and College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, Callahan threw for 12,878 yards and 130 touchdowns in his Wesley career. In 2015, Callahan became the first NCAA Division III quarterback to ever throw for over 5,000 passing yards in a single season and only the second quarterback in NCAA history to throw for 5,000 or more yards and 55 touchdowns during the 2015 season.
A reserve/futures contract locks up a spot on the 90-man roster going into camp for the 2019 season.
