On. Jan. 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th President of the United States by Chief Justice Earl Warren. President Kennedy delivered an approximately 1,384-word inaugural address.
However, out of that historic speech, the words most Americans remember were near the end of that speech and consisted of 22 words. The words were “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” This message was intended for all American citizens but those who served in the military truly knew what this meant because at that time many were already serving their country.
