Cannon Scholars Town Hall Meeting Features Wesley Alumnae

The Wesley College Cannon Scholars Program held their second Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Town Hall meeting on Feb. 24, 2017, in Cannon Hall 7. The Town Hall meetings inform the current Cannon Scholars of the graduate opportunities available to them upon successful completion of their STEM undergraduate degrees from Wesley.

Two alumnae from the Cannon Scholars Program, Riza Bautista ’16, and Samantha Weber ’16, spoke at the meeting about their current experiences in graduate school and gave advice to students on how to effectively prepare themselves for this next step in their education.

Bautista graduated with a B.S. degree in mathematics and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in bioinformatics at the University of Delaware’s Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CBCB) under the mentorship of Dr. Cathy Wu, the CBCB Director.

To financially support her graduate studies, Bautista applied and received the prestigious fellowship award, the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT), from the National Science Foundation.

Weber graduated with a B.S. degree in biological chemistry and is also pursuing a graduate degree in biological sciences at the University of Delaware.

The Delaware EPSCoR (Experimental Project to Stimulate Competitive Research) program funded by the National Science Foundation and the State of Delaware DEDO (Delaware Economic Development Office) program under grant number IIA EPS-1301765. Delaware INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence) program funded by an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences – NIGMS of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the State of Delaware DEDO (Delaware Economic Development Office) program under grant number P20GM103446. And the National Science Foundation S-STEM DUE grant through Wesley College’s Cannon Scholar program under award number 1355554 and the State of Delaware DEDO program.
