Field Hockey

Oct 29, 2009 - Stevenson Topples Wesley in OT
Kaitlin May's overtime goal lifted Stevenson to a 3-2 field hockey victory over Wesley College in CAC action. The Wolverines (11-8, 3-3 CAC) held a 20-9 advantage in shots, but had to tie the game twice to send the contest into overtime. Stevenson (6-11, 2-4 CAC) struck first on a score by Kelli Battista in the 19th minute for the only goal of the first half.  At the beginning of the 50th minute, Abigail Hill (Dover, Del./Lake Forest) dribbled down the right side and shot to the far post to tie things at 1-1 for the Wolverines.  The tie lasted just over eight minutes, however, as Raechel Manly redirected a shot in front of net to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.  Later in the half, Stevenson failed to clear the ball and Nicole Hill (Pocomoke, Md./Holly Grove) fed Sheree Pleasanton (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna), who scored her fifth goal of the season to tie things at 2-2 with just 3:41 to play to send the game into overtime. Then, in overtime, the Mustangs intercepted a clear attempt by the Wolverines and May took an assist from Sarah Bauer for the game-winner. Lindsey Martin (Princess Anne, Md./Washington) and Amanda Fisher (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) had defensive saves for Wesley. Kara Zimmerman stopped 10 shots for Stevenson, who also benefitted from a pair of defensive saves by Natalie DiPaolo.

Nov 1, 2009 - Wesley Advances With OT Win
Sophomore Sheree Pleasanton (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) scored on just over three minutes into overtime as Wesley advanced to the CAC field hockey semifinals with a 3-2 win over St. Mary's (Md.). The Wolverines (12-8) took a 1-0 lead early in the game on a score by Abigail Hill (Dover, Del./Lake Forest), who scored on a reverse sweep in the 11th minute.  The Seahawks tied the score at 25:51 when Brooke Masimore found the back of the cage and the scored remained 1-1 at the half. St. Mary's then took the lead with a goal from Ali McIntosh with less than 11 minutes left in the contest and it looked as though they might pull a first round upset.  However, with just 1:34 left in regulation, it was Hill again to tie the contest with her fourth goal of the season and second of the afternoon. Then in overtime, Pleasanton took an assist from Brooke Tadlock (Middletown, Del./Middletown) in front of the net and knocked home the game-winner, her sixth score of the year.  Sarah Johnson (Honeybrook, Pa./Twin Valley) made a dozen saves for the Wolverines.  Emma Lauhoff stopped six shots for the Seahawks.  St. Mary's outshot Wesley 21-11 in the game. With the win, Wesley advances to the CAC semifinals to face top-seeded Salisbury at 6:00 PM on November 4.

Nov 4, 2009 - Wesley Ousted from Playoffs
Salisbury's Kristina Fusco converted a penalty stroke in the first half and another in the second as the second ranked Sea Gulls defeated Wesley 2-1 in the CAC Semifinals. Wesley (12-9) outshot Salisbury (15-1) 3-1 in the early going.  Then in the 13th minute, Brooke Bennett (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) made a defensive save before the Sea Gulls were awarded their first of two penalty strokes of the evening.  Fusco converted for the first score of the day at 12:39, but Salisbury's lead did not last long. It lasted just 16 seconds to be exact.  Sophomore Sheree Pleasanton (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) broke down the middle of the field and struck the ball off the back of the cage to tie the contest at 1-1 with her seventh score of the season. Neither team had a shot for nearly 15 minutes of play after Pleasanton's tally, but the Wolverines' Sarah Johnson (Honeybrook, Pa./Twin Valley) turned away two Salisbury shots during the final eight minutes of the first half to preserve the tie through halftime. The two squads went over 14 minutes without a shot to open the second half before the Sea Gulls were awarded another stroke that Fusco knocked into the goal for a 2-1 lead.  Johnson finished the game with seven saves. Anna Cooke stopped a pair of shots in the win.

Oct 30, 2009 - Wolverines Talk to Local Middle School About Academics
Members of the Wesley College football team and coaching staff met with 65 students from Central Middle School in Dover, about how to make the right academic choices and devising an academic game plan.  The idea for the visit came from Wesley's defensive coordinator Tom Smith, who is also a Social Studies teacher and team leader at Central Middle.   Coach Steve Azzanesi talked about topics that Head Coach Mike Drass and the Wesley College staff discuss with their players daily like preparing for class, not missing class, dressing to impress, being early to class, sitting up front (SLANT sit up, lean forward, act interested, nod & track the teacher), and building relationships with their teachers.  After meeting as one big group they split up into ten groups with each Wesley football player leading a discussion with six or seven middle school children on how they use these six points for academic success and answer any questions.  The Wesley College football players that participated where C.J. Bacote, Abeeb Badmus, Tambua Bradford, Matt Fridell, Brandon Mitchell, Jarrett Williams, Jordan Culbreath, Eric Adams, James Buettner and Jeramie Powell.   After the discussion the group had grilled hotdogs and hamburgers and played football.

Oct 31, 2009 - Five-Peat: Wesley Wins ACFC Title
The third-ranked Wesley College football team clinched its fifth straight Atlantic Central Football Conference Championship with a 30-12 win over Salisbury in the Route 13 Rivalry. It was Wesley's 15th consecutive conference win, dating back to 2005. Salisbury appeared to grab the momentum at the beginning of the game with a 37-yard kick return by Jonathan Briscoe and three plays later the Sea Gulls were on the Wesley 36.  However, on the next play, Sean Kelly lofted a pass short and Aaron Benson (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) went up to get it for his fourth interception of the year and returned it 31 yards to the Wesley 46.  The Wolverine offense then went on a nine-play, 54-yard drive.  On the final play of the drive, Shane McSweeny (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) threw to Sean McAndrew (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township), who made a one-handed grab for the score eight yard touchdown. The score stood at 7-0 in the second quarter when a 30-yard pass from Kelly to Tyler Curley set up a four yard touchdown run by Warren Anderson.  Dakevis Howard (Wilmington, Del./Concord) blocked the extra point attempt and Wesley remained on top 7-6 with 11:42 left in the half. The two squads then traded turnovers, with Wesley regaining possession on a fumble recovery by Howard off a forced fumble by Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake). McSweeny dialed McAndrew's number again, firing a five yard laser to the tight end for his second touchdown of the day and a 14-6 Wesley lead. A tackle for loss by Mike Asiedu (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) and a sack by Mike Ward (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) on the next Sea Gull series forced a punt and Wesley took over at its own 24.  On the first play, Aaron Jackson (New Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) broke containment on the left side and found the corner for a 76-yard touchdown run to put the Wolverines ahead 21-6 at the half. Wesley was forced to punt on the opening drive of the second half, but received more heroics from Howard, who forced and recovered a fumble on the return to give the Wolverines the ball at Salisbury's 43.   A 37-yard rush by McSweeny set up a nine-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Bacote (Burlington, N.J./Lenape Regional) as the Wolverines went ahead 28-6. Salisbury tried to mount a comeback, scoring on a six yard rush by Valdase Morris, but had more problems with the point after. The Sea Gulls went for two and Asiedu intercepted Kelly's pass and returned it 100 yards for a 30-12 lead to cap the scoring. Mayes had a monster game for the Wesley defense.  The sophomore end led the team with nine tackles, eight solo, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. Asiedu, Marcus Wilson (Pennsauken, N.J./Camden Catholic) and Ward all had 2.5 tackles for loss as the Wolverines tallied 16 tackles for loss in the contest.  Wesley also forced four fumbles in the game, with Mayes, Asiedu, Howard and Reggie Millner (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) all separating Sea Gulls from the ball. The Wolverine defense limited Salisbury's option running game to just 84 yards on 39 carries and just 197 yards of total offense.  The Wolverines, however, rushed for 206 yards on the day.  Jackson led the attack with his second straight 100-yard game, rushing 19 times for 127 yards. McSweeny added 78 yards on the ground and added 161 yards passing and three touchdowns. Gene Knight (Baltimore, Md./Overlea), McAndrew and Leonard Stevenson (Nanjemoy, Md./Lackey) all had three catches. Morris and Bryan Woolson paced the Sea Gulls with 44 yards apiece on the ground and Ricky Cassidy led the defense with a game-high 10 tackles. Wesley will look for another win with its third straight home game, hosting Lake Erie College on November 7

Nov 2, 2009 - Wesley Holds Steady in Rankings
The Wesley College football team held at No. 3 in both the D3football.com and AFCA Top 25 polls and No. 1 in the ECAC Lambert Meadowlands rankings. The Wolverines remained third in both of the Division III national polls and stayed atop the ECAC® Lambert Meadowlands Division III Poll by FieldTurf Tarkett after a 30-12 win over rival Salisbury.  The win clinched Wesley's fifth consecutive conference title. In the national polls, Mount Union and UW-Whitewater are again the teams ahead of the Wolverines.  In the D3football.com rankings, the Purple Raiders tallied 19 of the 25 first place votes, with the Warhawks pulling in the final six.  In the AFCA poll, Mount Union received 39 of the 40 first place votes and UW-Whitewater had the final first place vote. In the Lambert Meadowlands rankings, Wesley tops the poll for Eastern supremacy for the fourth straight week. Wesley, 8-0 in 2009, hosts Division II Lake Erie College on November 7 at 1:00 PM.

Nov 2, 2009 - Jackson Named Player of the Week
Wesley College running back Aaron Jackson (New Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) was named the ACFC Offensive Player of the Week after his performance in a 30-12 win over Salisbury. Jackson turned in his second straight game of at least 125 yards with a 127 yards against the Wolverines' rival.  He also rushed for a 76-yard touchdown in the second quarter to help Wesley pull away for the win.  It is the second straight week he has won the award.

Nov 4, 2009 - Mayes Named to Team of the Week
Wesley College sophomore Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after his performance in a 30-12 win over Salisbury. Mayes led the Wesley defense with nine tackles, including eight solos as the Wolverines downed Salisbury. He had five tackles for loss as Wesley limited the Sea Gulls' 15th ranked rushing attack (260.7) to just 84 yards and 2.2 per carry. The sophomore also chipped in with a pair of sacks in the game. The sophomore is now tied for second in Division III in tackles for loss with 19.5 on the season. It is the second time this season he has been chosen to the D3football.com Team of the Week after also earning the honor on October 9. Wesley, 8-0 and ranked third in both Division III national polls, hosts Division II Lake Erie College on November 7 at 1:00 PM at Scott D. Miller Stadium.

Oct 31, 2009 - Wesley Falls in CAC Tournament
The 5th seeded Wesley men's soccer team fell 3-0 to 4th seeded Stevenson today in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference 2009 playoffs. The Mustang's Tyler King netted the first two goals in the victory ending Wesley's season. King scored his first goal at 21:42 of the first half after he took a throw in then dribbled down the right side sneaking a shot past Wesley goalie, Nick Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.). Wesley fought back with a tough defensive effort in the rest of the first half leaving the Wolverines down 1-0 at the horn. Wesley had its chances in the 2nd half when a brilliant header by Omega Debale (Jos, Nigeria) was saved by Mustang goalie, Ryan Flannelly just before the 72 minute mark. Stevenson added the second and third goals just over 5 minutes apart late in the 2nd half as King found the net after he dribbled in from the left side after a restart at 78:13. Kyle Baker put the icing on the cake, when he converted on a penalty kick after Wesley's Dan Canova (Ocean City, N.J.) received a red card in the box at 83:26.

Women’s Soccer

Nov 1, 2009 - Wesley Falls in CAC Playoffs
A comeback bid by Wesley College came up short as the Wolverines fell on the road at York (Pa.) in the first round of the CAC women's soccer playoffs 3-2. The Spartans (14-4-1) led just 1-0 at the half after a goal by Erin Mummert midway through the 13th minute.  The lead swelled to 2-0 just 1:19 into the second half, however, on a goal by Kat Torode. Meghan Rowland made a three goal advantage on a shot that trickled into the goal in the 71st minute.  The Wolverines (7-11) fought back with a goal by Sammi Nevin (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), who beat the York keeper top shelf for her sixth goal of the season in the 77th minute.  Meghan Aiello's (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) first career goal in the final minute cut it to 3-2, but time ran out on the young Wolverines. Sydney Kahan (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) made 10 saves for Wesley. Desiree Halaka stopped four shots for the Spartans, ranked ninth in the South Atlantic Region.

Nov 2, 2009 - Campbell Named CAC Player of the Week

John Wesley(1703-1791), namesake of Wesley College (founded 1873)
Wesley College’s John Wesley (1703-1791) was a well educated man. A woman on a trip across the Channel recalled meeting him in his old age, reading one of the ancient classical writers. His writings are dotted with quotations from a variety of sources. The Wesleyan emphasis on education was not lost when the Methodist Episcopal Church was established in North America. One of the first things that Methodism undertook was the establishment of a “College”. This was not a college in our sense of the word but a school for the sons of Methodist preachers, orphans and for “the children of our competent friends”. It was named Cokesbury after the pioneer bishops Francis Asbury (1745-1816) and Thomas Coke (1747-1814). The College did not fare well and eventually burned down, perhaps under mysterious circumstances.
