Oct 25, 2009 - No. 18 CNU Comes Back on Wesley
Wesley College's Brooke Tadlock (Middletown, Del./Middletown) gave the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead, but No. 18 CNU scored once before the half and once just after for a 2-1 win in field hockey action. Tadlock scored her team-high 11th goal of the year at 12:59 to give the Wolverines (11-7) a 1-0 lead.  The Captains (11-4) struck back in the 32nd minute on a tally by Chrissy Kurecki that sent the teams into the intermission tied at 1-1.  Less than a minute into the second half, Brianna Milne took an assist from Kaitlyn Yandle and scored what proved to be the game-winner. Sarah Johnson (Honeybrook, Pa./Twin Valley) made four saves in cage for the Wolverines.  Emma Stout turned away nine Wesley shots.

Oct 24, 2009 - Jackson Scores Four in Win
Wesley College's Aaron Jackson (New Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) tallied 260 total yards and scored four touchdowns as the fourth-ranked Wolverines dispatched Webber International 34-7 on Family Day. Jackson rushed for 173 yards and three scores and added a fourth touchdown and 87 yards receiving in the game. He rushed for 31 of Wesley's 46 yards on the Wolverines' (7-0) on their opening possession, including a 20 yard touchdown to give Wesley a 6-0 lead. Mike Ward (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) forced a Torrence Moise fumble on the Warriors next possession and Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) dove on it to give Wesley the ball at the Webber 35.  On the third play of the drive, Shane McSweeny (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) found Ellis Krout (Dallas, Texas/Roosevelt) for a 14-yard score and a 13-0 lead with 6:50 left in the first quarter. The Warriors (1-6) cut the lead in half with a 12-play, 82-yard drive capped by a deflected pass from Moise that landed in the arms of Andre Edwards for a 14 yard score with just over a minute left in the first quarter. Neither team scored in the second period as the squads went into halftime with Wesley ahead 13-7. The Wolverines wasted no time getting on the board in the third quarter, as Jackson turned a screen pass from McSweeny into a 63-yard touchdown, cutting back at the Webber 20 to finish off the run. The two teams then traded punts, the second of which John Smicklo (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) sent 50 yards to the Webber four yard line.  The Warriors only moved the ball out to the eight and after another punt, the Wolverines took over in Webber territory at the 48.  It was Jackson again, this time on a one-yard plunge to give Wesley a 27-7 lead midway through the third. In the fourth quarter, Mayes tipped a Moise pass into the hands of Mike Asiedu (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) who returned the interception 21 yards to the Warrior 14.  Jackson needed just two carries, the first for 13 yards and the next another one yard plunge to give Wesley its final touchdown, his fourth of the day, and a 34-7 lead. Wesley outgained Webber 405-199 and limited the Warriors to just 48 yards on 30 rushes.  The Wolverines, meanwhile, rushed for 280 yards in the contest. Windy conditions at Scott D. Miller Stadium limited the passing games for both teams somewhat as McSweeny finished with 159 yards through the air and added 43 more rushing on 12 carries.  Webber's Moise, meanwhile, was just held to 151 yards through the air. Defensively, Ward led the Wolverines with eight tackles, 1.5 for loss, a forced fumble and a sack.  Asiedu and Zach Johnson (Marydel, Md./North Caroline) added seven stops apiece.  Asiedu also intercepted a pass, broke up another and had a tackle for loss.  Mayes forced a fumble, recovered another and had 1.5 tackles for loss.  Carlos James (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) registered two stops in the backfield, including a sack and also recovered a fumble. All of the defense led to a rough day for Webber's top two tailbacks, Taylor Atwood and Rupert Webley, who combined for 11 carries for 17 yards. Keon Frazier and Logan Skjefte led Webber with six tackles apiece.  Wesley stays home to face Route 13 rival Salisbury on Halloween.  Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.

Oct 25, 2009 - Wesley Moves Up to No. 3
The Wesley College football team moved up to third in the latest Top 25 rankings released by D3football.com. The Wolverines were able to move up after a 34-7 win over visiting Webber International and a loss by last week's No. 3, Wheaton (Ill.) to North Central (Ill.). Wesley now trails just top ranked Mount Union and No. 2 UW-Whitewater in the rankings.  The Purple Raiders received 19 first place votes, while UW-Whitewater garnered the remaining six. After the Wolverines, the next three teams in the rankings all moved up a spot as well.  St. John's (Minn.) checks in at No. 4, followed by Linfield and Central. North Central moved up to No. 9 after their win over Wheaton (Ill.), who dropped to 14th. Wesley hosts Salisbury in the Route 13 Rivalry on October 31 at 1:00 PM.

Oct 26, 2009 - Wesley Tops Lambert Meadowlands Poll
For the third straight week, the Wesley College football team sits atop the Division III ECAC® Lambert Meadowlands Football Poll presented by FieldTurf Tarkett. Wesley has topped the weekly top 10 for Eastern Supremacy each week a poll has been released. On the national scene, the Wolverines are ranked third this week by both D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association after a 34-7 win over Webber International. Established in 1936 as the Lambert Trophy to recognize supremacy in Eastern college football, the award has since grown to recognize the best team in the East in the Bowl Subdivision. In 1957, the Lambert Cup was created to recognize non-Division I-A teams, and in 1966 a Division III award was added. In 1983, the Lambert family decided the Meadowlands Sports Complex would be the best organization with a sincere and involved interest in college athletics to sponsor and manage the award, and since that time, the awards have been known as the Lambert Meadowlands Awards. To be eligible for the Lambert Meadowlands Award, a school must be located in the East or play at least half of its schedule against eligible Lambert teams. The territory includes New York, New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania, while teams in the bordering states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and the District of Columbia qualify if at least half of their schedule features eligible teams. Teams in Eastern-based football conferences, regardless of location, qualify if at least half their schedule is against Lambert eligible teams.

Wesley's Aaron Jackson (New Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) and Mike Ward (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) were the recipients of weekly honors from the ACFC after their performances in a 34-7 victory over Webber International. Jackson tallied 260 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in the win. He scored three rushing touchdowns and added a 63-yard touchdown reception. He led the team with both 173 rushing yards and 87 receiving yards.  It was also the first four touchdown game for a Wolverine since the 2006 season. Ward had a busy afternoon as the now third-ranked Wolverines picked up their seventh win of the year.  He had eight tackles (1 solo, 7 assisted), 1.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one forced fumble in the victory as Wesley limited the Warriors to just 48 yards rushing and 199 total yards.  He was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week, winning at least a share of the award for the second week in a row. Wesley, ranked No. 3 in Division III, hosts Salisbury in the Route 13 Rivalry on October 31 at 1:00 PM.

Oct 27, 2009 - Jackson Wins Two More Honors
Wesley College running back Aaron Jackson (New Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) earned two more honors after his performance in a 34-7 win over Webber International.  He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and named ECAC Southwest Offensive Player of the Week. Jackson scored four touchdowns and had 260 yards combined between rushing and receiving in the win. His 173 rushing yards (on 23 carries) and 83 receiving yards (on three receptions) were each team highs.   It was also the first four touchdown game for a Wolverine since the 2006 season. Earlier in the week, he was named the ACFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Men’s Soccer

Oct 25, 2009 - Late Goal Snaps Win Streak
A goal by Ansger Otto in the 85th minute lifted Stevenson to a 2-1 win in a key CAC men's soccer match and snapped Wesley College's three-match win streak. The Mustangs (9-8, 4-3 CAC) got on the board early in the contest on a goal by Josh Danza, assisted by Tyler King in the 17th minute.  Wesley (10-7, 4-4 CAC), however, tied it up right before the half on a corner by Luis Rivera that Kyle Long (Delaware, Ohio/Buckeye) knocked home for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. The tie stood, however, until Otto fired a shot into the left side of the net late in regulation for the win. Nick Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) made 12 saves for the Wolverines.  Ryan Flanelly stopped five for the Mustangs. The match had implications for the CAC postseason, with the winner hosting the loser next weekend in a first round match up.

Oct 27, 2009 - Defensive Struggle Goes to Catholic
In a game where the two squads combined for just 16 shots, the Wesley College men's soccer team fell 1-0 at Catholic, ranked No. 10 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Neither team was able to mount much offense throughout the contest until the Cardinals' (13-3-1) Tyler Bills took a pass from Brian Maher and sent it home for the game's only score. Nick Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) stopped four shots for a Wesley (10-8) squad playing without several starters due to injury. Quinn Daly made a pair of saves for Catholic. The contest was the Wolverines' final tune up before traveling to Stevenson for the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference playoffs on October 31.

Women’s Soccer

Oct 22, 2009 - Wolverines Notch Road Win
Two goals in the opening four and a half minutes of the second half lifted the Wesley College women's soccer team to a 3-0 win at Lebanon Valley. With the Wolverines (6-9) leading 1-0 entering the second half, Chelsea Buttacavoli (Brick, N.J./Marlboro) stretched the lead with her first career goal, midway through the 47th minute.  Just 2:55 later, Hannah Hardman (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) lobbed the ball in front of the net setting up a Kim Fearnbach (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) header that resulted in a 3-0 Wesley lead. Lindsey Campbell (Bear, Del./Padua Academy) scored the game-winner in the first half with a long shot just over the outstretched hands of Lebanon Valley's (6-10-1) Alyson Reitmeyer at the beginning of the 22nd minute. Sydney Kahan (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) made five of her seven saves in the second half to preserve her fifth shutout of the year. Reitmeyer stopped five shots for the Dutchmen in the losing effort.

Oct 24, 2009 - York slips by Wolverines
Despite a valiant defensive effort, the Wolverines fell to CAC rival and 6th (NSCAA South Atlantic) ranked York (Pa.) 1-0 in women's soccer. Wolverine goalie Sydney Kahan (Cranston, R.I.) made 7 saves in the loss. Wesley (6-10) played even with York (13-4-1) until the second half when a cross from the right side was caught by Kahan, bobbled, then hammered home on the doorstep by the Spartan's Erin Mummert for the game deciding goal. Wesley defensive style helped keep the Wolverines in the game for the rest of the game, but unable to mount a offensive charge. York showed its power capturing many team statistics including 12 shots and 7 corner kicks to Wesley's 5 and 0 respectively. Wesley did have 5 shots in the game, including two by Lindsey Campbell (Bear, Del.) but none of them threatened the York goal. Neither York goalies, Sarah Spanarkel and Desiree Halaka, recorded saves on the day.

Oct 27, 2009 - Wesley Clinches Playoff Berth
Two second half goals by Lindsey Campbell (Bear, Del./Padua Academy) lifted the Wesley College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Marymount (Va.) in CAC action. With the win, the Wolverines (7-10, 3-5 CAC) clinched the sixth seed in the upcoming CAC playoffs and will travel to third-seeded York (Pa.) for a first round match on Sunday, November 1. The Saints (1-14, 0-7 CAC) took an early 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Elise Gebauer in the 27th minute for the only score of the first half. Campbell scored her fourth goal of the season in the 62nd minute to knot the score at 1-1.  The freshman then found the back of the net for her first career multi-goal game with the game-winner in the 83rd minute. Sydney Kahan (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) stopped 10 shots in the win. Gaby Prellezo made five saves for Marymount (Va.). Wesley will look to repeat its effort in the 2007 playoffs, when the Wolverines pulled off a first round upset to advance to the semifinals.

Volleyball

Oct 22, 2009 - Wesley Stymied at St. Mary's
The Wesley College volleyball team fell in three sets at Capital Athletic Conference rival St. Mary's (Md.). Nettie Choice (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) paced the Wolverines (8-20, 1-5 CAC) with five kills on eight attempts and the team's only block of the night.  Lilia Brekke (Prescott Valley, Ariz./Caesar Rodney (Del.)) posted four kills and six digs.  Carle Ax (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) added a team-high nine assists and Wesley's only ace of the evening. The Seahawks (14-9, 3-3 CAC) slowly but steadily pulled away in the opening set for a 25-12 win.  In the second set, Wesley trailed just 6-5 after a service error by St. Mary's (Md.).  Wesley returned the favor, however, opening the door for a back-breaking 14-5 run that dug a 20-10 for the Wolverines as the Seahawks notched a 25-11 victory. A kill by Choice early in the third set pulled Wesley to within 5-4, but another service error started an 8-0 run for the Seahawks who went on to take the set and the match 25-13. Jen Lamar had nine kills and four blocks for the Seahawks.  Katie Obal dished out 18 assists.

Oct 26, 2009 - Wesley Falls to Gallaudet
The Wesley College volleyball team fell in straight sets to visiting Gallaudet in Capital Athletic Conference volleyball. The Bison (20-10, 6-2 CAC) closed the first set with six straight points to claim a 25-11 win. The Wolverines (8-21, 1-6 CAC) fell behind 7-3 in the second set, but rallied to make it 23-20.  Gallaudet, however, finished off the Wolverines with back-to-back points for a 25-20 victory. In the third set, the Bison steadily pulled away, winning the set and the match with a 25-14 final.

Oct 28, 2009 - Wesley Honors First Seniors
Wesley College honored the first four-year seniors in the history of the Division III volleyball program before finishing up their season against Mary Washington. Before the match, the Wolverines retired the jerseys of their two pioneering senior captains:  Nettie Choice (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and Lilia Brekke (Prescott, Ariz./Caesar Rodney (Del.)).  Between the two of them, they occupy top spot in career kills, blocks, digs, and aces. On the court, Mary Washington took three straight sets from the youthful Wolverines, who outside of their two seniors are comprised completely of freshmen and sophomores. The Eagles jumped ahead 7-0 in the first set and went on to claim a 25-16 win.  In the second set, the Wolverines ran into some stellar service game from UMW's Ellen Smethurst, who kept the Eagles in control for the final 13 points for a 25-6 win.  Mary Washington then finished off Wesley with a 25-13 win in the final set. Choice and Brekke close their careers with eight of the top 10 single season kill totals and five of the top six single season block totals.  Wesley finishes the 2009 season with a record of 8-22 overall and 1-7 in the CAC.

John Wesley(1703-1791), namesake of Wesley College (founded 1873)
On November 14, 1784, Thomas Coke (1747-1814) and Richard Whatcoat (1736 -1806) tracked down the leader of the Methodist movement in America, Francis Asbury (1745-1816), at Barratt's Chapel near Frederica and not far from Dover.  Asbury came in as Coke was preaching, which was no surprise.  It was seeing Whatcoat helping to give communion to the congregation of Methodists that was the surprise.  This was the first time communion (and also baptism) was administered to Methodists by ordained Methodist clergy.  It was during this time at Barratt's that Coke laid out John Wesley's plan for establishing Methodism as a church.  After much discussion, Asbury and Coke called a 1784 Christmas Conference in Baltimore.  It was there that Methodism in America ceased to be simply a spiritual growth group and became a church.  The Methodist Episcopal Church would be the precursor of all future Methodist churches including the current United Methodist Church.
