Why I Teach
As a nurse educator I feel I am at the HEART of nursing where I can still practice the ART of nursing. At the same time I facilitate growth of the profession of nursing by engaging the newest nurses in learning through role modeling to provide compassionate, competent nursing care.
I am certified as a Pediatric Nurse through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. I also hold certification in Pediatric Advance Life Support, Child Care Health Consultation Training, and Pediatric Palliative Nursing Care.
Recent research conducted by me includes a longitudinal study investigating the impact of a mentor-mentee relationship on self-esteem and sense of coherence of the senior nursing student. The National League for Nursing accepted this research for presentation at the 2011 Educational Summit. Research presented at the NLN Research Summit included a correlation study examining the impact of a safe patient-lifting curriculum on promoting musculoskeletal health in future nurses. Current research is a correlation study between participation in a senior simulation experience and outcomes on achievement tests and the NCLEX exam.
I presented at the 2009 and 2010 National League for Nursing Educational Summits on topics related to faculty satisfaction indicators and strategies to meet the nurse educator role. In 2011, I reviewed textbook chapters for F.A. Davis Publishing Company.
Professional organization affiliations include active membership in the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Delaware Nurses Association (DNA). Through this affiliation I served as delegate to the ANA from 2002-2005, president of the DNA from 2002-2004, and currently as co-chair of the DNA Continuing Education Committee. As an active member of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, I serve as the treasurer of Tau Beta Chapter. I also holds membership in the American Medical Surgical Nurses Association.
In 2013, I received honorable mention recognition as a Top Nurse in Delaware for 2013 by the Delaware Nurses Association. The recognition was for Excellence in Nursing in the category of Academic Educator.
In addition, I am active in the community as an appointed member to the State of Delaware Health Disparities Committee and as church usher and member of the Health Ministries Team. A Life Time member of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., Dr. Rubino is dedicated to community service.
