Heather M. Schalk, SHRM-CP

Human Resources Director

Heather is responsible for the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resources function at Wesley College. The Director position manages all employees of the department and is responsible for the performance management within the department. Heather comes to Wesley College with over sixteen years of higher education experience within Human Resources from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and Salisbury University. Heather has her Masters of Science degree in Business Management with a concentration in Human Resources from UMUC and a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from Bowie State University. Heather joined Wesley College in May of 2016.

Brenda Gardels

Payroll and Benefits Manager

Brenda is responsible for the full-cycle processing of timely, accurate, and compliant semi-monthly payroll for all Faculty, Staff and Student Employees and acting as the liaison with ADP, Inc. She is responsible for managing relationships with Wesley College’s benefit and retirement vendors ensuring a smooth enrollment and separation process. Brenda has an extensive tax background and has been working closely with staff on the Wesley Payroll and human resource teams since May 2012. Brenda is a State of Delaware retiree and has her Master of Science in Management with a concentration in Marketing and Bachelor of Science degree in Management with an emphasis on staff training and development from Wilmington University. Brenda joined Wesley College in May 2012.

LaVette Whaley

HR Generalist

LaVette is responsible for, but not limited to, Wesley College’s onboarding process, policy interpretation and support, worker’s compensation administration and recruitment. LaVette works closely with Brenda to ensure that all employees are accurately paid and on time. LaVette works with departments to onboard new hires as appropriate, meeting with each new employee to thoroughly explain the cafeteria of benefits available to all new hires. LaVette has a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resource Management from Chestnut Hill College, an Associate of Science degree in Business Management from Peirce College, and an extensive Human Resource background, most recently with IBM Global Services and myHRPartner.com. LaVette joined Wesley College in February of 2016.
